| BULLDOG TEAR STAINS Oh yes, those dreaded tear stains that seem to creep further and further down your Bulldogs face the older he gets. You just want to know how to get rid of them right? The problem is that there is no "CURE" for Bulldog Tear Stains. There are a number of factors which cause the tear stains to begin with and even include the dog food that your Bulldog eats - and the lighter or whiter your Bulldog's face is, the more visible the stains. However, not all is lost in this war over tear stains ~ As I do have a list of helpful suggestions for you - you may have to play around with them over a period of time to figure out which ones work best for your Bully. But hopefully, with a little patience and the following suggestions, you will be able to get the discoloration under control AND keep it that way! Change to Filtered, Bottled or Distilled water instead of Tap Water if possible. Some arguments are that the minerals in tap water can cause Tear Stains.
Add a teaspoon of white cider vinegar to the Bulldog's drinking water to control new stains from appearing. The vinegar changes the pH of the water which will work wonders in the Tear Stain war and helps eliminate bacteria and deep stain color. It prevents yeast build-up and is best used as prevention once the stains are removed or nearly removed.
Take a clean cotton ball and apply Peroxide to the stained area. Next wipe the wrinkle/stain dry using a second cotton ball. Dont leave the wrinkles wet from the peroxide. Wet wrinkles will only cause bacteria and irritation. Once you have wiped the wrinkles dry, apply a layer of Desitin or Aveno diaper rash ointment onto the stain and leave it. For severe stains the cleaning should be done at least once a day. Once the stains are under control, cut back on the cleaning to once or twice a week. Between cleanings, just wipe their wrinkles each day with baby wipe or washcloth. Medicated Baby Powder will also work wonders for keeping the folds dry and preventing bacteria and infections from forming.
Mix equal parts of Peroxide and White Milk of Magnesia. Add enough Cornstarch Baby Powder to make a paste. Apply the paste to your bully twice a day for a week. The Tear Stains should be minimized at this time. A once weekly application of this paste should help prevent any re-occurrence.
Add 1 Tablespoon of Low sodium tomato juice to each meal (just sprinkle on top of the food.)
Add fresh or dried parsley to your Bulldog's food. If your dog does'nt like the taste, hide it in a snack.
Ask your vet for Malaseb wipes, they are medicated wipes for tear stains as well as infections in the folds. They are said to work really well. Usually you can get them without a prescription.
Check Petsmart or your favorite Dog Store for Tear Stain Cleaning Solutions and apply to your Bulldog's stains as directed on the package.
